Captured this a few years ago now. I foolishly let the storm get way too close and got quite a fright when this bolt arrived on the scene. Never again!

This is a cropped image but captured at 18mm so it's almost right on top of me. Live and learn.

Now I use long lens for storms and bail out once lightning is within about 50km. Doesn't pay to push the envelope folks. (But I do like the image)

Maybe no Mick, but what a shot you got though! That is terrific.

Thanks Lloyd. Kinda glad I got away with it.

Scary though - there's thrill seeking, then there's utter stupidity. It's a fine line to walk

Or non-striking? Depends how you look at it.

Not for that one Barb but the next strike which was much closer, maybe 500m certainly did. Bolted to the car with my tail firmly clamped between legs.

Amazing shot and wow must have been close at 18mm. I have a very well developed sense of personal danger, so doubt I'll ever get a lightning shot - will have to content myself with the clouds.

I've been told by many that I have a serious problem in this area of my life. Risk assessment is not my forte.

When I find myself in dangerous situations I've had to train myself to slow down, get myself as calm as possible and carefully think my way through.

Basically I try and think "what would a 'normal' person do now".

I'm much better now than I was....keeps life exciting! (and I'm still here so I must be making some good decisions from time to time )
