  • Snowy Mts spring shoot

It crossed my mind that a road trip to the Snowy Mts might be good to get some shots.

Anybody know of a good place to stay?
Should I stay in the village (either Perisher or Thredbo) and catch the chair lift to the top to get my pics or will these kinds of vistas be available elsewhere in the mt? What I'm getting at is I guess I'd rather stay somewhere quiet with the hope that it was near a lookout or near some old buildings etc (not asking for much!!)

I'm after some BIG views, snow gums, nice tufts of grass, old buildings, bush tracks, big strong men with their shirts off ..... You know just the usual......

Was also wondering the grass will be a bit flat and yucky after the snow?

Any thoughts would be appreciated, I don't know the area at all.

When does the official ski season end up there (it's this weekend in Vic). Once the season finishes the prices drop dramatically. At this time of year there will still be way too much snow for any sort of walking on the higher places.

Hey Kath, I am heading down there around November and am trying to time it so the snow has basically half melted, thus getting some nice waterfalls and making it easier to get around (also cheaper too), am also keen for outback huts for some nighttime trails etc, i am still in teh planning process but will let you know if i come across anything useful.

That was my plan too - I found a couple of places, one was only $85/night on the Alpine way but need to work out how far it is to the highlights, nice bouldery rivers etc ..... will let you know too what I find out......

Sounds great. November should be a good time with a bit of snow still around.

I've only ever stayed in cabins at Sawpit Creek (in the NP) and that was many years ago, so I can't help you much with where to stay.

Might be worth giving the Tourist Info Center in Cooma a call.

          Beautiful scenery - enjoy

There were a lot of great old huts in Kosciusko when I lived there years and years ago. Many still exist, but most are out of the way.

Here is a link to an association that looks after some of them, along with photos and information.http://khuts.org/khuts-photography.o...d=57&Itemid=67

The old Coolaman homestead still can be reached by road as far as I know. It is down the Tumut end of the park. Don't forget to visit Yarrangobilly Caves while you are there, and I think they have left the old caves house standing and National Parks have turned it into a couple of self contained accommodation units.

It is a beautiful area, particularly in spring and early summer when the flowers are out.

If you go to Thredbo, you can take the chairlift to the top, then walk from there to Mount Kosciusko along the tops, but not if there is too much snow. Kosciuszko-Thredbo walks

            Enjoy your visit there.

Hey Kath, I am gonna head down there in a couple of weeks and teh only thing I do know is that there are far too many awesome locations. The sugar Pines at Bago Sate forest seem to be quite popular (how the hell that is not a NP i dunno)

The other good spot that requires some walking is Blue Lake but there seems to be lots of good creeks/rivers etc.

Hey Kath, I thought I would update this thread based on my scouting trip experience.

In terms of places to stay, there not really any places that I now know of which will give you mountain top vistas etc on teh doorstep, I found most places you will need to still drive albeit 20-30 minutes to get somewhere decent. The next best bet and this is what I will do next, is to camp out on a ridge somewhere (preferrably on the leeward side ) and capture sunset and sunrise. To get a sunrise ontop of any of teh hills when staying in any of teh villages is gonna be real hard. I think you would be better off staying in Jindy where its more reasonably priced.

had all those when I was there except old buildings cause alot of them have been burnt down in the recent fires (a few years ago now). The snow gums are a bit sparse now too with all the fires, very little of teh old trees have recovered at all. I woulda taken my shirt off, but it was too cold

So, that said, plenty of grass, big views, cool lakes and bush tracks were a plenty.

in some areas teh grass was a bit feisty, mostly down on lower areas where teh ski fields are, but up on the hills alot of it looked pretty cool imo. At this time of year there is still quite a bit of snow up high and there are still plenty of cross country skiers up there.

Anyway, below a few images from my two days there. I went with teh dream of a sunrise and sunset, but is was not to happen so some big mountain views (well as big as the get in oz), waterfalls and snow shots had to suffice.

The two main locations I went to were Charlotte's pass / Blue Lake and Guthega.
