  • View on the river Rhine

A view from a mill at the boards of the river Rhine.
The mill is in the city of Leiden.

Oops another different way to show pictures on this forum.

Click image for larger version Name: Views:	0 Size:	188.3 KB ID:	490803

And this is the mill I made the view on the Rhine from.

I do keep having trouble posting pictures, very often something different happens then I expected…
It is because I am used to the behaviour of another forum.
E.g. now the view of the river is on two places…

o… and i have a question for Isac, regarding the uploading of images I understand the hosting thing of size… but… if a picture is on e.g. imgur, I imagine that it doesn’t occupy space on the forum, is that right? Or is something different going on?

Hi Caroline, no the linked image from image hosting sites (like Imgur in your reference) does not store the image in our database, but we do like to keep them within our size allowance because of the bandwidth large images use. The problem some have with image hosting sites is they some times change the rules, which affects the viewing format in our forum. And if the image on your hosting site is moved or removed for some reason, the link breaks and the image disappears from the thread. Another reason is many want to have full control over their own images and not rely on cloud services.
I was asked by a person (with little knowledge on matters I.T.) if their photos would get damaged if it rained heavily in the "Cloud".

I'm not sure why your images are so small, so if you can let me know your process when inserting the link to Imgur, it may help.
I have images on several hosting sites but I always have trouble with Imgur in getting the correct link to place in my posts. I'll have to check to see why. Cheers, Greg

      Thanks for your answer Isac.
I see indeed that the bandwidth of a larger image can be an issue.
And true, that if the picture is moved or removed, then it disappears. For me personally it is earlier a feature than a problem, but that is depending on my history on other forums and to have the possibility to control images in posts, even if you cannot touch this post again. Of course that is forum dependant.
Surely funny the rain in the Cloud..
I will experiment a little more with the imgur links.
I have a shortcut on my ipad, with which I very easily can select a picture which then automatically is uploaded to imgur and which returns the code of the image directly into my clipboard. Which I then just have to paste in the post. That works excellently on the other forum, but I will have to do more research to make the same happen over here, with the right size of the picture, maybe I will have to write a different shortcut.

I just did a test with an image from my Imgur account and using the standard BBCODE link works well.
Here's the format of the BBcode:
Click image for larger version Name:	SH_513.jpg Views:	0 Size:	33.6 KB ID:	490920
... and this is the image displayed in the above link. This image was uploaded to Imgur at 1024px x 821px (240kb).

You can only paste the BBCODE that Imgur creates as the link to the image. The CSS code edit is done by admins inside the vB software within the forum. Do you have a reason for uploading large files to Imgur?
Before I make changes to the CSS, try uploading to Imgur, a file that is 1200 px (longest side) and under 300kb.
Then in the TESTING channel, at the bottom of the channels list on the home page https://www.ausph.com/forum/testing create a new thread and insert the Imgur generated BBCode, to see what happens.

PS: In the TESTING channel, I have created a couple of threads, using Imgur generated BBCode. One with my own username and another as a normal member (Normat) and the images display OK. I uploaded the image (Eurasian Coot) to Imgur at the size you are using 2021 x 1668 1.75 Mb (@72 PPI).

The reason that I upload large files is the following (it is something I found out, after lots of tryouts)
I also post pictures on another forum, it is not a photography forum, but a psoriasisclub forum. Over there we enlighten some posts with pictures just for fun. You cannot upload over there, only link, so therefore Imgur.
I found out that when I uploaded a picture from my camera roll, on my ipad, I mostly work on my ipad, to imgur and posted the link, that the picture then became vague… unsharp and for a while I couldn’t fix that. Apparently Imgur does also something with the size.
Until accidentally I posted a screenshot to imgur and then on the forum, and that picture appeared to be sharp…. It took a while before I realised that. And from that time on, I only uploaded screenshots to imgur. That forum itself automatically presents the pictures smaller, in one format, but if you enlarge it, it is sharp so it is not really smaller. They don’t care about the size of the pictures, which is logical as most posts are without pictures, so the are only occasional, very different from here.
I have not yet tried what happens when I, reduce the size to 1200 pixels, upload that to imgur, and test how that looks.
I will do that in your TESTING channel, but not now. .. I had a heavy and stressfull day and am exhausted now.
          Sleep well.

... There's a good cure for the "stressful day" symptoms. It's called Wine!
Sweat dreams for now and I hope you wake in a relaxed state

        Greg,
you are completely right about the wine.. and I do like it.
Need some to cool down, because I was very very busy the past days, so no experimenting with the pictures yet. I’m sorry, but there will come a time…
