  • Reverend John Flynn memorial

    G'day all

This memorial is located at 'Three-ways' ... the junction of the Stuart Hwy and Barkly Hwy just north of Tennant Creek

The Rev John Flynn back 100 yrs ago started his 'mantle of safety' across outback Australia, linking isolated cattle stations first by camel train, then pedal-powered radio until the Flying Doctor service was formed. These two images were taken at sundown, thus the very warm colours to the stonework

ps- some minor editing to remove overhead floodlights, otherwise they are sooc JPG images

And from the colour slide archives, from my 1968 Aussie Tour comes...

The setting sun gives wonderful colour Phil. A bit of perspective distortion but I don't mind that. We generally get much better results from digital, but a bit of tweaking of the slide scan would make a difference.

I like them Phil. That lighting has given them a real vintage look. How did you remove those lights?
On the slide version, in PSE, a simple colour correction and a bit of a lift in HSL really improves it.
Not much has changed from back then, perhaps the trees have grown in the background.

My memory's not as sharp as it used to be.
