This is my first attempt at photographing aeroplanes I'm at a bit of a loss as to the best crop. Do I just follow the rule of thirds, unfortunately there no leading lines to draw a persons eye to the subject, it's just there. I thought photographing the planes would be hard enough, but presentation is proving harder.
In hindsight I probably should have used a slower shutter speed to give some movement to the propellers.

That's the way he was heading mate, straight down. Looked pretty spekky from where I was standing.

All great shots John. Prop motion is very tricky and there's no set shutter speed - it all depends on the actual prop speed - its just an experimental thing. It can be anywhere between 1/60th and 1/320th. Photographing jets is easier! Also, whether the planes are coming towards you or flying past you. Choppers are a lot slower as well. Great to be able to just hang around the aerodrome and try settings for different planes so you can note them down for future eference. Keep it up. I did get some shots of the Roulettes when they were in Cairns, those guys are world class for precision flying. You can always use the new Spin Blur filter added to Photoshop CC.

Lovely work John. Can you tell us what you did for this one? You mentioned a "a bit more work".

I used #6 and the one above to see if the props could be blurred and I think the new "Spin Blur" tool in Photoshop did OK - it's really flexible to get the right look. Any views?

While not a full 360 deg of blur the effect does improve the image. Thanks for having a play.

This was only one of the many options in the Spin Blur tool, there are so many variations.

I needed to merge the tail of the plane from one shot into the body of another shot.
