  • 7d + freight train + low light

Was taking photo's near a train track and managed to get this one as a freight train went past. While not all that good of a photo i was pretty happy with the noise performance at the settings i used. 30mm 1.4 1/320 iso 3200 and played with in LR3.

Check out the ridiculous noise on the 7d Scotty...

Lucky the train had NR (Noise reduction) set to 118 ! bazinga.
lovely shot mate. very well taken. Great balance of light detail. i love what the rocks in front of the train add actually (is that weird?) that and the track lines and the poles making me look up to the sky!.
    Masterful composure.
Dare you to post the raw shot.
Its not paranoia if everyone is actually watching you

Haha, i didn't notice the NR up the top. wasn't quite that much, was only 55

Nothing masterful about it, just nice and close and using the old spray and pray technique.

Here is the raw, loaded in LR3 and exported as jpeg with no edits

Figured because it had so much noise, you might as well try it in B&W and bring the train up a bit.

        Not sure if it works...

First thoughts - I think the lights on the front are just too bright for it to work. Same can be said about the colour version, they are too distracting.

I like the idea of the B&W though. If i get another go at this in better light then i'll see how it comes up in B&W

Personally I think the lights are pretty cool and make the shot interesting. I tried to bring the details in the train out a bit... in the colour it looks like a mass of darkness. You can bring it up and leave it in colour, but then you get a LOT of chroma noise, which looks like crap compared to black and white noise.

Now that I look at it, is that a boot silhouette in the window of the train? If so, is the driver sitting there with his feet up?!

Yeah it looks like it. Suprising since he saw us and tooted the horn when he was approaching. Must have realised that we weren't gonna jump in front of him and went back to how he was
