Both nice shots John. Agree about #1 and #2 looks as if there's a reward in sight that is enticing the fixed gaze.

No. the fact that it has lost focus heralds the end of the image in my humble opinion.

Agree with Hans. And if you added top space how far would you go? It seems you've done a square crop for a reason so to get a reasonable portrait shape it would need to be quite a bit of space added. Just MHO. Sometimes a good tight crop makes the images and I believe that to be true in this case.
