  • Are your B/W images planned that way?

There have been many wonderful B/W images posted lately and I was wondering whether you went out with capturing B/W images as your intention, or did you choose B/W in PP because nothing else seemed to work. I don't recall ever going out specifically to shoot mono, unless it was for a challenge.
I would be interested to see how others approach their B/W photography.

I guess I tend to prefer black and white although statistically I take more colour images overall. Ansel Adams would be my photographic hero if I had one and my earliest memories of photos I love were some Ansel Adams prints on the wall of our cousins farmhouse in NZ in the 1960s. Because these days I mainly shoot with Fuji cameras it is very easy to set the jpeg simulation in camera the black and white then the image in the EVF or on the LCD is in black and white even when shooting RAW (which obviously arrives in camera as colour) so you can see what the basic b&w result will be when you take the shot. Sometimes I just look at a shot on the computer and think black and white. There is no conscious decision it is just something that happens.
For my recent posts. the Triumph Single single shots were conceived as black and white I wanted that grainy somewhat flawed look as soon as I saw the bike and decided to take some photos of it. The photo of my Tiger in the whole bikes thread was a rescue of a colour photo. The colour just did not work so I tried black and white. The Ducati Scrambler was always black and white because of the location (I will post s a couple more images in the thread to explain).

A great response, thanks K1W1. As I stated earlier, I rarely go out with the intention of getting a B/W shot, more often than not my B/W's are a result of nothing else working . Having said that. I do love a well done monochrome image.

I'm a lover of B&W images. I'm only inspired by other B&W images. I remember once doing a wedding - it was late and everyone was on the dance floor (mostly pickled), when I noticed my only battery was getting low. I decided to shoot some B&W until it failed so I set B&W in camera and used my live view to see how it looked - and I got some pretty cool shots. The B&G were happy and that's what mattered most. I also love using NIK Effects which has opened up a whole new world for B&W and I think it's fantastic but I love to experiment with different effects of my own. MTBW

I just fired myself from cleaning my house.
I don't like my attitude and I caught myself drinking on the job.
