I agree the b&w works well. Inwould crop off the items on the right to focus attention on the welder.

I kept coming back to this Todd because I was thinking it needed SOMETHING to give it some oomph! Then it came to me that it may need to look a bit more "grungy". I hope you don't mind

I do it in Photoshop. I load all JPG files into Camera Raw first, so I can do my enhancements. For this one, I made the following adjustments In Camera Raw:
Basic:
Sharpening:
Then just sharpened it in PS Amount:50% / Radius:2.5 Pixels / Threshold:5.
