1. Red-backed Fairy-wren.A male (possibly a juvenile) gaining his breeding plumage. This shot shouldn't have worked. It was too far away, among twigs and branches, but nothing actually obscured the bird, the camera managed to focus and Photoshop removed the clutter.
2. Australian Brush-turkey. For the non-Australians, not actually a turkey but someone apparently thought it looked like one. They build a mound of leaf litter to lay their eggs, and the heat of decomposition incubates the eggs. They add or remove material to maintain the correct temperature, but that is the limit of their parental care. They are a nuisance in suburban gardens due to their habit of spreading mulch and leaf litter around gardens and lawns.
3. Buff-banded Rail. I thought I might get a decent photo of this until a runner came past and the bird disappeared into the undergrowth. This was the first "insurance" shot and I'm still waiting on that decent photo.
