better to get it as close to right in camera if you can too. within reason is better to slightly overexpose in camera and pull back in post, so long as highlights not blown. this reduces noise too. in terms of histagram it is called shooting to the right. also if you can get an idea of how your camera will interpret a scene, you would know when it is likely to underexpose a subject on you. all a case of practice of course
