  • Great Crested Grebe

    I've never seen these before.

I came across this pair at Murray Lagoon in Rockhampton and spent an hour or so trying to photograph them. There was a row of dead stalks a few metres from the bank due to the water level having risen, and areas of shadow due to the low morning sun. The birds kept moving to and from the far bank and in and out of shadow. It was very frustrating trying to get them close, in the light and between the stalks.

These are the best of the results.

    1. This and the next are very heavy crops as the bird was at the far side of the lagoon.

    3. This has better detail as the bird was much closer, but has some out-of-focus stalks, or shadows, on the left.

Nice set. They are quite common here in the UK. I wasn’t aware they were so widespread.

When I photograph them here I often wait at distance until they dive. I then move in to where I think they will surface and get down low. Sometimes they will pop up where I predicted, but often I am way off. Their reed dance is spectacular.
Always feel free to rip apart any image of mine I post.

Thanks Phill. I tried the 'move when they dive' approach but didn't work this time. I didn't realise they were so widespread either until I looked them up.

3 great shots, I really like the second with the stillness of the water in the foreground and the reflection of the grebe.
