  • Collared Swallowhawk

Sometimes, while walking Charlie, I see birds in trees that are just silhouettes or too far away to recognise so I don't bother to take a shot. But for this one, I wasn't confident but took a 400mm shot anyway because the outline looked like some sort of raptor but I had no idea what type. It kept its back to me wherever I positioned myself so a back shot was all I could get - better than nothing I guess. To my surprise when I viewed on my PC, it discovered that it was a Collared Swallowhawk! I've never seen one before so I'm happy that I got a new sighting. Some days are just better than others.

He is saying the same thing "first time Ive seen him!" Good pose, you got lucky.
Better a full bottle in front of me
    than a full frontal lobotomy.

      Hi Isac
Turns away from the supposed predator so that it can quickly escape -- You got a good eye shot anyway

He watched me like a hawk! Yes I guess luck is a big factor when it comes to wildlife photography - right time, right place.

Worked out well Isac, and I like the pose showing the back and face. Removing a couple of branches, particularly the front out-of-focus one, would make a big difference.

Well done on getting a new one to cross off your list.
I know I mix up this and I think it the Collared Sparrowhawk.
But I like how you have got it.

You're right Ralph, thanks. They are very similar (both in the Accipiter family) but on closer inspection the yellow outline around they eye seems to be the only difference. Cheers.

I revisited this one after Alan's advice and decided a vertical image looks better. (IMHO)

Thanks Alan. I must agree! I was going to remove the shadows from branches but couldn't find the time - I think it's OK as is.
