  • Swallows / Fairy Martins about along our waterways

    G'day all

As I walk around the district and along the coastal reserves, I see many of these delightful birds flitting to and fro. They are too fast to attempt to catch in the air, but as they sit a while, they are good on the eye!

    As always, feedback welcome

Good capture Phil. These are "Welcome Swallows" (Hirundo neoxena) and yes they can get up to 60 km/hr in flight and when they are foraging they slow down to about 35-40 kn/hr. That's why they are hard to catch in flight. You had some harsh light to contend with as well. I must say I have had some success in that area with a couple of decent shots. I was lucky enough a while back to watch a baby beikng fed by all the other adult swallows and I just click away merrily for some great shots. TFS.

Nice shot Phil, coped well with the harsh light. I can't catch them in flight, but I have seen some captured by others - I have no idea how they do it.
