Shame about the BG,but it seems par for the course with these little guys, thanks for the ID,I have some shots of the same birds and didn`t know their name.
C+C,EDITS OK I shoot a Canon 90D with a few bits of glass.
A well captured BFD Ross. They do scurry around at a great rate of knots and don't stay still for long - they are very skittish. I see them around a lot at the lake, they are tiny but very cute.

good work on getting this one. a lower angle would have lifted it, but I guess you didnt have the option available.
Thanks Stephen & no I couldn't get much lower. I feel I need to think more about the shot & getting into a better position to be able to get the best photo possible. On a side note for shots like this or perched birds what mode would you recommend, manual or aperture.
to be honest, either is ok for perched stuff. manual is good for moving stuff and I usually use it. my reasoning is that if I set the exposure, and use the right AF settings, all the camera has to do is focus. having said that, a knowledge of exposure and how your camera will interpret a scene will let you know if the meter is lying to you or not.
aperture priority is a good mode to be in if you may get pop up targets and no particular chance to set the exposure manually.
