  • White Faced Heron

I have noticed this one at the lake lately and seems to have settled in nicely, but it is still very timid. It seems to think it's not noticed when it's roaming around amongst the other ducks.

Up high in a leafless tree.

I took a few shots then walked away, turned back and he was still in the tree. I took an 18mm shot and then zoomed in to 400mm.
This is why the Tamron 18-400 is my carry-around lens.

18mm - hardly notice the bird.

    Hi Isac

Hmmm- and so your first pic is a crop from 400mm ~ making it something like a 1000mm shot
Still, it's remarkably sharp so well done for both camera and lens

You're beginning to find how I have been so very pleased with superzoom lenses for so long - even tho I have chosen to remain with small sensor / small camera bodies at the same time .... and how I traversed from film camera SLR lenses from 24 to 1000 into a superzoom all-in-one package that I still enjoy 15-16 yrs after swapping into digital

    Ain't our hobby great ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

    Phil

I have been a member of a Canon R facebook group for a while and you can't imagine the agonising that takes place or the number of people that will flog their 70-200 that cost megabucks because there is a new one which is just a little better.

Thanks for that Phil. I have a bridge camera (Canon SX50HS) not up to the standard of your Panny but still a good small unit for great zoom shots (1250mm). Yes our hobby is very special to us.

I've never had the pleasure of using the 70-200 and for what I do now, it's not on my bucket list. My lens collection takes care of all my needs from 10mm to 500mm and as mentioned, the bridge camera goes out to 1250mm. I really should flog a few off because since getting the Tammy 18-400, I don't need them. I would only keep 6 lenses
      1 - Tamron 18-400mm
      2 - Sigma 150-600mm
      3 - Tamron 17-50 (2.8) - sharpest lens in my kit.
      4 - Canon 50mm (1.8)
      5 - Tamron 60mm Macro
      6 - Canon 10-18mm Ultra Wide
      I'd flog the rest.

Cheers Stephen. I'm lucky to get these guys because they never seem to let me get too close and as soon as I move in or change position for a better shot, they scamper.

is funny cos we been lucky around our old areas in sydney where they didnt seem to be that worried. maybe the 600 lets you get the pix from out of the flight zone?

It'd be nice to have a 600mm but the 150-500 will have to do for now.

Not sure of the crop factor in your camera so may look the same. The tc on the 600 helps with the full frame body for me. Sometimes you get to shoot outside the flight range

I haven't got a TC, Ive heard they are not that great on an APS-C sensor. I have the Canon 7Dii (1.6 Crop Factor). So my Tamron 18-400 is 28-640 FF equivalent.

sometimes having full frame helps, cos it means you can add distance to the distance you need to be.
the tc lets me get full frame on small birds though, the 600 minimum focuses at 4.7m and that not enough to get little birds full frame, so if I use my 1.7tc I get 1000mm and that will give me full frame on thornbills etc at minimum focus, I think the shutter on my new body seems a bit louder too, so the noise makes them jump a bit

It would be nice to have the money for full frame but my cash tree died a few years ago. I think my wife poisoned it with Roundup
