Eastern Whipbird

Hi All,

I haven't been here for a couple of years, but came across the site again and decided I should get involved.

We spent a few days camping in Lamington National Park, Green Mountains Section (O'Reilly's) and came across some whipbirds. I hear them all the time but rarely see them, but these seemed quite tame and came within a metre or so but too close for my lens by then. These were taken under the rainforest canopy so not much light.

About 30 years ago, I used to work with Mike O'Reilly, before he went back to the family property. I would like to visit there one day.

Brad: It's well worth a visit. Lots of birds around the car park, camp ground and resort and many are used to people. Highly recommended.

any picture of a whipbird is a good one, very shy and hard to get out in the open. good work

Thanks Stephen, but these birds weren't at all shy. I heard one photographer say that this was the first place he had been where the birds came to you. We had one hop through our camp at one point - pity I didn't have the camera ready at the time. Still I'm very happy to have these shots.

Sounds like a nice spot to stay for a spell. That must be the first picture I have seen of a whipbird. Incredible noise from such a small unit.
