Wompoo Pigeon

While I was working on my new pergola, three Wompoo's landed in an Umbrella tree nearby. I got a few group shots, but nothing I was happy with.

All shots @ iso3200, f8, 1/750th, and 600mm ( #3 @ 460mm )

Thanks Pete. I agree, I never tire of seeing these beautiful birds, even though I see them most days in the trees around my house. They are a forest dweller ,usually they stay in the deep shade so its hard to capture their true colours.
These were still taken in the shade, hence the iso3200, but just enough light. Those green/blue feathers really light up when the sun hits them.

Black birds, Starlings and sparrows in around George Town. I'm looking for a small block near one of the national parks where thing of this nature will improve.

Cheers Alan. Lighting is a big challenge for sure. I had 2 in the trees just off my verandah this afternoon, they were pretty much just silhouettes against the bright sky above the tree canopy.

I do consider myself lucky to live where I do, its great to have the wildlife so close.

These birds have been a real challenge, I have taken 1000's of shots trying to capture their beauty, my keeper rate is probably around 1-2% .

Thanks Hans. They do have an unlikely colour scheme don't they. When I first moved here and saw them for the first time, I had no idea what they were. I went and bought a field guide for birds to help ID them, its been a handy book.
According to my book, "The Slater field guide to Australian Birds" they range from Cape York down to the Hunter R NSW. They live in the rainforest along the coastal strip.

Cheers Charles. They don't make it down your way either I'm afraid. They live on fruit and seeds, but I have read that they have been known to eat insects at times as well.
