  • Black Cockatoos

I'm doing a couple of days a week in IT and photography for the Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre in the foothills at Martin in the Perth foothills. I also do their flyers and ads etc for their facebook account. It's very rewarding work and gets me out of the house! Here's a few from yesterday. These birds are off to Kangaroo Island in S.A. and as they can't be released back into the wild, they are going to use them for displays, education and general awareness of the plight of these beautiful birds. Scientific name: Calyptorhynchus bankssi naso
Common name: Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoo
Other names: Karrak (Noongar), Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo (south-western)
#1 - First of the two Juveniles heading to S.A.

Appreciate you kind words Ironwood. It's not really work - 'cause I love doing it. Marc Anthony once said that if you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life".

Good work Isac, I love to see them in the wild as I do often. We get the yellow tailed species in Tassie. I can't remember seeing any reds here.

Thanks Greg. The red tails are mostly in the Northern parts of Australia and the South West of Western Australia. The endangered Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus latirostris) is one of just two species of white-tailed Black Cockatoo on Earth. The other is the Baudin’s Black Cockatoo, and they are both found only in the Southwest of WA.

Fantastic work Isac (and I'm not talking about the photos )
Black cockatoos are one of the wonders of nature.

Particularly like the first. DOF lessens the obvious fact these are in captivity. Top detail and love the close up pose of it concentrating on food. (could you selectively blur the BG a bit?)

They are a gorgeous bird and in the wild will always let you know when they are around - noisy critters. Great work with the centre

Thanks Mark and P Plates. Yeah they are noisy alright! Our office is over the large aviary which is home to Red Tails, Baudins and Carnabys. Noisy As!! But they are precious birds. We have a friendlies aviary where visitors come and interact with them - they love it.
Mark, as you know I love a challenge, so here's a fix for the background of #1. Click image for larger version

^ after seeing your original photo I wouldn't normally like this ('cause I can't do it yet) but how wonderful it makes the bird look.

Thanks Mark. There's hundreds of tutorials on removing backgrounds on the WWW. I use my on method so as to leave the fine details intact and then just drop in a sky behind it. It would be a challenge for me to do a tutorial if you want one.

Thanks for the tutorial over but I'm sure you have better things to do. I'll learn it when I really need it.
