  • Sea Eagle

Immature White bellied Sea Eagle (I think), with the Tamron 16-300mm. Still struggling with it for birds. A big crop and lots of processing.

    270mm f/7.1 1/500 800 ISO

    270mm f/7.1 1/400 800 ISO

Look awesome to me. I don't think it will ever make an ideal birding lens but with your skills in both photography and PP you are still getting great results.

It seems to be producing pretty good BIF shots Alan. They look OK so far. As you know I use the Canon 7D and I'm sure Nikon is much the same for settings.
      My settings for BIF are:
      Shutter Priority
minimum 1/1000th - Auto ISO - f:8 - Stabilization OFF - Servo Mode - Spot Metering - Focus can be all focus points to centre (I prefer centre)

I've also recently discovered that by setting image quality to medium size (standard not fine) actually is better for sharpness.
I also set back focus button which takes the focusing away from the shutter button 1/2 press.

My memory's not as sharp as it used to be.

Thanks - I'm getting Chromatic Aberration around the wings (noticeable when enlarged), so It's taking a bit of time to remove it and the sharpness just isn't there.

You are right Gabby - a birding lens it's not - and birds need to cooperate by flying a lot closer too

            Missed this reply, sorry Isac

I did try Auto ISO for awhile (it always came back as 800 ISO), and also IS off - nothing seemed to make much difference. I have set 2 user settings, one at 200 ISO and the other for 800 ISO. Both Continuous Focus and Centre Focus

I'll have a look at 'image quality', thanks. I have also heard that the back focus button can make life easier - just something else to come to grips with, sigh

            Thanks for the suggestions

sorry I too did not read Isac's settings advice.
I have used the BB back button focus for some time now it is very easy to setup on the 7000 do a DR Google on it you will never look back
I only use auto ISO in mixed light conditions.
              cheers

I think the very fast shutter in shutter priority is the key - thanks Alan. Keep at it.
