Definately not easy Bill, but you've found some nice complient subjects there to practice on.
That damn foreground grass that keeps jumping in the way of your lens is a pain. I sometimes have to do a bit of gardening to get a clear view!

I'd say the formation shot was a real bonus. I think birding would be one of the most difficult and frustrating genres. The subjects rarely, if ever co-operate, constantly move, hide amongst reeds/branches etc and require the photographer to have lots of patience, and practice, practice, practice. You'd have to be happy with the lens though, these are sharp. I would experiment with Mick's idea of opening the aperature more though. Have fun!
