I should add that in the 8 months of living here in Cairns, I have seen a total of four Pelicans roosting on the mud flats of the Esplanade and that was today and they were not close enough to get really decent shots and I used my 100mm macro lol. Need a longer lens.
Anyways I am so lucky to have had the experiences I have with Pelicans both in Safety Bay and Woodman Point, WA because I seriously doubt I will be only a metre away from a Pelican again.

Anna have you been around the lakes near the botanic gardens, I forget what they are called now, but we were up there in June and I captured some really great shots of Pelicans early morning, also some spoonbills. the water was still managed to get some good reflections shots as well. I think its called the Centennial Gardens from memory.

Gordon, Centenary Lakes is the one. Eve and I went there earlier in the year but didn't see any then so might be now that it is cooler that I saw those on the Esplanade. Thanx for the tip. Might see if I can get there one morning. Are you able to tell me which part of the Lakes. We walked from one end ie from the botanic gardens right up to where there is a playground.
Lovely shot Jess. I'd also like to know where most of the pelicans around here hide out. I've seen a couple in flight whilst driving but with so many creeks in the area I'm still wondering where they land. Unfortunately because of industry a lot of our waterways are impossible to access.
