Gulls (often informally called seagulls) are birds in the family Laridae.

This little fellow was relaxing on the shore when I snapped a quick shot as I went off to find a new location for the surfing competition I was covering.

    Thanks for looking

    nice light and reflections.

I can see where you were going with this
but it doesnt do it for me in this case

very tight at top and right I reckon.
easily fixed in this case though, would be an easy image to add some canvas top and right

Thanks for that Stephen. I'm not a big bird photographer, however I do like to snap some wild life if ever I get a chance out on the job, like today

      Appreciate the feedback.

I dont think the critique this got is unique to bird photography.
it would be the same regardless of subject matter.
consider a model standing there, looking out of frame, now turn the model 180 degrees and have them looking into the frame, it somehow feels stronger.
we sort of perceive the subject to be looking into the frame rather than out.
the same with the tightness on top.

or could it be that I am just a picky old bastard?

As you may know from looking at a lot of my photos, I like tight crops and have always used them. So I'm use to cropping it pretty tight like this. But I can see where you're coming from

cropping tight is what the editor wants in his paper.
he wants the action and nothing but the action.
