So you have taken the next step in your portrait photography, you have bored the partner, kids, cats, dogs and neighbors.. Its time to start taking photos of people that want to get some photos done!
Work on a concept. Come up with an idea (or even copy one) that you can work towards that fits well with the model. We all love gorgeous folk but if it doesn’t fit into your theme then it’s not worth it.
Where can I find a model?
1. Put the feelers out on Facebook
2. Check out www.timeforprint.com.au
3. Check out www.modelmayhem.com
4. Ask another photographer
Make sure when you are contacting the model you are polite, friendly and clear with your intentions. Many dodgy photographers who want nudes lure their models in and get them naked on site. If you know some models ask them, they all have an awkward story to tell. Don’t be that person.
I found them now what?
Lets think about the things you will need on the shoot.. Get your props set, location checked, cameras and plans made. It is very professional to be prepared. Make sure that you communicate this to your model stressing the importance of pre‐preparation. You want her to take this as seriously as you do.
Make sure you keep communication up with your model too. Communication will help them feel more at ease when they meet you for the first time. Even coffee and a chat can make the world easier when you meet.
I am at the location with the model and I don’t know what to do!!! HELP
Keep calm. - They like your work or they wouldn’t be there with you
Act professional – If you are professional about it they will be more at ease. That doesn’t mean you can joke around.
Keep your goals in mind ‐ Know what you want and communicate it. Nothing worse than having zero direction.
Tell them what to do – Give them direction, the more direction you will give the better the model will hone in on your thoughts and start to move freely..
Keep it comfortable – If you have an issue with the model being a bit stiff, relax them, have a chat, get them used to the camera, shoot some test shots, etc.
Compliments go a long way – “You look gorgeous”, “I can’t believe how well these photos are coming out”, “you’re a natural” etc. will win you brownie points. The more you get the more they will feel comfortable. Don’t take it over the top though our you could freak them out.
TIP: Show them the photos, they will enjoy the experience more.
